If your dentist told you that you need a sinus lift before getting dental implants, you might be wondering what you’re in for. We get it. The name sounds intense. But sinus lift recovery is usually straightforward. Most patients are back to their normal routine within a few days.
Let’s walk you through what to expect and how to make your recovery as smooth as possible.

What Exactly Happened?
A sinus lift adds bone to your upper jaw in the back of your mouth. We gently lift the sinus membrane and pack bone grafting material underneath it. This creates a solid foundation for dental implants.
The procedure itself is done with local anesthesia. You won’t feel anything during it. And we use our CBCT 3-D imaging to plan everything with precision before we start. But after the procedure, your body needs time to heal.
What to Expect Right After
When you leave our Bryn Mawr office, you’ll still be numb. That’s normal. You might notice some swelling in your cheek or upper lip. You might have a little bleeding from your nose or mouth. And you might feel some pressure or fullness in your sinuses.
None of this is dangerous. It’s just your body’s natural response to the procedure. We’ll send you home with clear instructions and everything you need to stay comfortable.
Your First 24 Hours
These are the most important hours for a good recovery. Here’s what we recommend:
- Rest: Take it easy for the rest of the day. Sit up when you can. Lying flat can increase swelling.
- Ice: Apply an ice pack to your cheek on the side of the procedure. Do this in 15-minute intervals. It helps keep swelling down.
- No blowing your nose: This one’s important. Blowing your nose can put pressure on the sinus membrane. Don’t do it for at least a week. If you sneeze, keep your mouth open to release the pressure.
- No straws: Drinking through a straw creates suction. That’s not good for your healing site. Stick to sipping from a cup.
- Soft foods: Yogurt, soup, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs. You get the idea. Nothing crunchy or chewy.
The First Week
Swelling usually peaks around day two or three. That’s totally normal. It’ll start going down after that. You might notice some light bleeding from your nose or some blood-tinged discharge. This is normal too. Just don’t blow your nose.
You’ll probably feel ready to get back to work after a day or two. But we recommend taking it easy for a full week when it comes to physical activity. No heavy lifting or strenuous exercise. Nothing that strains your sinuses.
Pain is usually mild and well-managed with over-the-counter medications.
What You Should Avoid
Some things can slow down your healing. Here’s our list of what to skip:
- Smoking: This is the biggest one. Smoking delays healing and can cause graft failure. We strongly urge you to avoid it during recovery.
- Alcohol: It can interfere with healing and might interact with medications.
- Spicy foods: They can irritate the area.
- Strenuous activity: You don’t want to raise your blood pressure too much.
- Flying: Changes in air pressure aren’t good for your sinuses right after this procedure.
